Overview

About Olympia

Olympia is the town that Hobe Sound almost became. In the 1920s land boom the Olympia Improvement Company laid out a Greek-styled townsite meant for a film production center, and Hobe Sound was briefly renamed Picture City.

The boom ended in 1926 and the 1928 Okeechobee hurricane finished the plan; the name Hobe Sound came back. What stayed is the street grid, recorded as Olympia Plats 1, 3 and 4, with streets named Mars, Mercury, Athena, Saturn, Venus, Apollo, Ceres and Zeus, and the concrete streetlights along Dixie Highway.

The county roll lists about 474 residential parcels with Olympia in the legal description, including 87 vacant lots. Houses span a century: the oldest date to 1925, many went up in the 1950s and 1960s, and newer houses keep filling the grid. The typical house has about 1,510 square feet on a lot of about 8,400 square feet. Shops and offices line Bridge Road and Dixie Highway at the edge of the neighborhood.

The 1924 Olympia School on SE Apollo Street, now called the Apollo School, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002. Olympia is in unincorporated Martin County in the 33455 ZIP.
