Tequesta is a village of 6,158 people (2020 Census) at the north end of Palm Beach County, where the forks of the Loxahatchee River meet the Intracoastal Waterway just upriver from the Jupiter Inlet. Incorporated in 1957 around Tequesta Country Club, it has 20 named communities, from club and river neighborhoods to small condominium buildings on the water.

Overview

A Village on the River

Tequesta sits at the top of Palm Beach County, where the North Fork and the Northwest Fork of the Loxahatchee meet the Intracoastal, just upriver from the Jupiter Inlet.

The village grew out of one 1950s plan: Tequesta Country Club, laid out along the river forks in 1955 and incorporated as a village two years later. Its streets still follow the water. River and canal lots wind through the club neighborhood, Intracoastal homes line the waterway, and small condominium buildings sit on Waterway Road and along the Intracoastal. East across the waterway, the Village’s Beach Road section reaches onto Jupiter Island beside Coral Cove Park.

Inland, older streets of single-family homes mix with townhome enclaves and garden condominiums off Tequesta Drive and US 1. North of the county line, Turtle Creek and the Jupiter Hills Club carry Tequesta addresses but sit in Martin County, which changes the taxes, the permits and the zoned schools.

What we watch for buyers here: whether an address is in the Village, in Martin County or in Jupiter Inlet Colony; the flood zone and elevation on river and canal lots; seawall, dock and lift condition; the age and reserves of the older condominium buildings; and how each club handles membership. The community guides cover those one community at a time.

History

A Short History of Tequesta

Tequesta is younger than its neighbors: a 1950s plan along the river forks that became a village in two years. The river, the inlet and the lighthouse across the water were here long before it.

  1. Before 1700

The Jobe people lived along this stretch of coast and the inlet. The Tequesta, whose name the village later took, lived farther south, in what is now southern Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade counties.

  2. 1696

Jonathan Dickinson’s ship wrecked near Jupiter Island. His journal is one of the earliest English accounts of this coast, and the state park just north of the village carries his name.

  3. 1860

The Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse was lit on July 10, 1860, across the river from where the village now stands.

  4. 1955

Charles “Charlie” Martyn bought 350 acres along the North and Northwest Forks of the Loxahatchee, laid out 600 home sites priced from $3,900 to $7,500 and named the subdivision Tequesta Country Club.

  5. 1957

Tequesta was incorporated as a village around the country club. Jack Kurtz was the first mayor and Bud Lathrop the first clerk.

  6. 1958

Dow Finsterwald, the Tequesta Country Club pro, won the PGA Championship.

  7. 1959

Jupiter Inlet Colony incorporated as its own town, separate from Tequesta.

  8. 1963

Members bought Tequesta Country Club from Martyn, and it stopped being semi-public.

  9. 1985

The Northwest Fork of the Loxahatchee became Florida’s first National Wild and Scenic River on May 17, 1985.

Your Next Chapter Starts With a Conversation

Every move starts a new chapter: a first home, more room, a place on the water, a winter home that becomes year-round. That deserves more than a search bar.

So we start with a conversation. What should the next few years look like? What can you not give up? I listen, then shape the search around your answers, so you only see places that fit and know what each one costs to own.

From there, my team and I handle the details: visits around your schedule, documents read before you ask, questions answered the same day.

Questions

Questions Buyers Ask About Tequesta

What does a home in Tequesta cost?

In the 12 months through October 2026, the median Tequesta home sold for $715,000, about $431 per square foot, across 199 sales. The middle 80% sold between $247,000 and $2,025,000: garden condominiums and townhomes at the entry point, inland houses in the middle, and river, Intracoastal and club homes at the top. The live listings on this page show current asking prices.

Do I have to join a club to live in Tequesta?

No. Jupiter Hills Club is by invitation, Turtle Creek Club is optional for homeowners, and Tequesta Country Club is member-owned with optional golf and a voluntary homeowners’ association. None of the three publishes a fee schedule, so we ask each club for its current terms in writing.

Is a Tequesta address always in the Village of Tequesta?

No. The 33469 zip code covers the Village, Jupiter Inlet Colony and part of southern Martin County, including Turtle Creek and the Jupiter Hills Club. The jurisdiction sets the taxes, the permits and the zoned schools, so we confirm it from the county property record for every address.

Can I keep a boat in Tequesta?

Yes. Homes on the Intracoastal and the forks of the Loxahatchee have private docks, and some condominiums keep a dock for owners. The way out to the ocean is the Jupiter Inlet. Depending on where the dock is, the run passes under fixed and opening bridges, so we check the clearance and depth against your boat.

How far is Tequesta from the airport?

President Donald J. Trump International Airport in West Palm Beach, formerly Palm Beach International, is about 33 minutes south. Fort Lauderdale is about 80 minutes, and Miami 90 minutes to two hours depending on traffic.

Can I rent out a home or condo in Tequesta?

Rental rules are set by each community’s documents: the minimum lease, how many leases a year and whether the association approves tenants. Some buildings are cooperatives, where a board approves every tenant. We read the declaration before you count on rental income.

What should I know about the older condominium buildings?

Several Tequesta buildings date from the late 1960s to the 1980s. We ask for the milestone inspection, the reserve study and any planned concrete work or special assessment, and confirm whether the building is a condominium or a cooperative, which changes the financing and the approval process.

What should I know about flood insurance in Tequesta?

Flood zones change from street to street, especially on the river and canal lots. We get the flood zone and an elevation certificate for the address and request wind and flood quotes during the inspection period, so the carrying cost is known before you close.
