Private club · Palm Beach Gardens

PGA National

A 2,340-acre golf community whose first course opened in 1980, about 5,000 homes in roughly 40 neighborhoods, and the one club in Palm Beach Gardens where joining is a choice rather than a condition of the deed.

What it is

The big one, and the optional one

PGA National is bigger than any other club community in Palm Beach Gardens on every measure that matters to a buyer: 2,340 acres, about 5,000 homes in some 40 neighborhoods, six golf courses and a resort hotel at its center. E. Llwyd Ecclestone Jr. developed it on land that had belonged to John D. MacArthur; the first course opened for play on March 4, 1980, the Champion followed in November 1981, and the neighborhoods filled in through the 1980s and 1990s. The developer sold the resort in 2006, and after two more owners it passed in January 2025 to Henderson Park in a joint venture with Salamander Hotels & Resorts and South Street Partners.

What makes it different for a buyer is the structure. The Property Owners Association runs the common areas, the gates, the patrol and the architectural review for the whole community. Each neighborhood has its own homeowners’ or condominium association under it. The PGA National Members Club is a third entity, and it sells memberships to residents and non-residents alike. Nothing in the deed requires you to join, which is why I often start a club-community search here: you can own the house first and decide about the golf afterward.

Membership and what it costs

The club does not publish a fee schedule and the third-party directories disagree with each other by a wide margin, so this table is honest about what is and is not known. The community-level charges are better documented than the club’s.

Where this table says ask me, it is because the club publishes nothing I can date. I request the current membership agreement and fee letter from the membership office and send it to you in writing. Community charges (POA, HOA or condo) are separate from anything you pay the club.

Golf and amenities

Six courses sit inside the gates. The Champion, by George and Tom Fazio, opened November 17, 1981, has been redesigned by Jack Nicklaus in stages (including a $4 million renovation in 2002), holds the Bear Trap at holes 15 through 17, and has hosted the PGA Tour’s Honda Classic since 2007. The Fazio was the first course, 1980, and carried the name Haig until November 2012. The Palmer, by Arnold Palmer, opened February 28, 1984. The Estates opened in 1984 as Stonewall Golf Club and joined PGA National in August 1988. The Match, by Andy Staples, opened in fall 2021 on the old Squire site and is laid out for match play, and the Staple is a nine-hole short course with holes of 60 to 130 yards.

Off the courses, the Sports & Racquet Club has 16 Har-Tru tennis courts (11 lit), 12 pickleball courts and two pop tennis courts, and the club lists more than 50 fitness classes a month. The resort spa was rebuilt at 40,000 square feet. Dining venues sit in the resort and the club; the club lists croquet and pool access with the social category.

Residences

The homes

Forty-odd neighborhoods built over two decades means the product runs from one-bedroom condos to estate lots, and the association under each one is different. The village names below are the ones that appear in the MLS today; the list is not complete.

ProductExamples (MLS village names)Notes
CondominiumsClub Cottages, Resort Villas and the PGA Boulevard condo sectionsCondo association under the POA; some sections are marketed with no club membership required. Milestone inspection and reserve study apply.
Villas, patio and courtyard homesPatio Homes, Barclay Club, Villa d’EsteHOA dues in some villages cover cable, internet, lawn and roof cleaning (listing remarks, 2025 to 2026).
Single-family and estate homesPrestwick Chase (built 1986 to 1997), Golf Club EstatesLarger lots along the courses; exterior changes go through the POA Architectural Review Committee.

Years and village names from MLS listings and a brokerage guide updated October 12, 2026. Three layers can apply to one address: the POA, the village HOA or condominium association, and the club if you join. I confirm whether any community development district bond or special assessment attaches to the specific address before you offer.

Before you commit

What I check before you join

Because the club is optional, the paperwork here is mostly association paperwork, and there is more of it than in a single-HOA community. The one club question that matters is what a listing means by “membership available”: sometimes the seller’s membership transfers, sometimes you apply fresh at the current rate. I get the answer from the membership office, not the remarks.

Questions

Questions Buyers Ask About PGA National

Do I have to join the club if I buy in PGA National?

No. Membership is sold separately to residents and non-residents, and listings in several villages are marketed with no club membership required. You pay the POA assessment and your village HOA or condo fee whether or not you join.

What does PGA National membership cost in 2026?

The club does not publish a schedule, and the directory figures conflict by tens of thousands of dollars, so I do not quote them. I request the current fee letter from the membership office and send it to you in writing before you decide.

How many associations do I pay?

At least two: the Property Owners Association, which bills an annual assessment with notice on June 1 and payment due July 1, and your neighborhood homeowners’ or condominium association. The club is a third and optional payment.

Can I lease a home in PGA National?

In most villages yes, subject to the village’s minimum term and approval process and to the POA rules. Because the club is optional, this is the simplest place in Palm Beach Gardens to lease a golf-community home without a club commitment; I check the specific village before we look.

How many golf courses are there?

Six: the Champion, the Fazio, the Palmer, the Estates, the Match and the nine-hole Staple. The Champion has hosted the PGA Tour’s Honda Classic since 2007.
