Overview
A Beach Town on the Lagoon
Lake Worth Beach sits on the Lake Worth Lagoon south of West Palm Beach, with its downtown on the mainland and its own beach across the bridge on the barrier island.
The city began as the Lucerne townsite, platted in 1911, and most of its streets still date from the 1920s and 1930s: cottages, bungalows and Mission and Mediterranean Revival houses in neighborhoods such as College Park, Parrot Cove and South Palm Park, several of them designated historic districts. Downtown runs along Lake and Lucerne Avenues, with the Lake Worth Playhouse and shops and restaurants in the old commercial district. Across the Robert A. Harris Bridge are the beach, the casino building and the William O. Lockhart Pier.
West of I-95 the market changes. A Lake Worth mailing address covers a large unincorporated part of the county well past the city limits: gated communities from the 1980s through the 2010s, golf communities such as The Fountains, Winston Trails and Atlantic National, and the communities along Lyons Road. Atlantis, with its own country club, is a separate small city. A Lake Worth address does not mean the City of Lake Worth Beach, and the difference shows up in the tax bill, the utilities, the permits and the zoned schools.
What we watch for buyers here: the jurisdiction parcel by parcel; historic district rules on exterior changes in the older neighborhoods; the age of roofs, plumbing and electrical in 1920s and 1930s houses; flood zone and elevation near the lagoon; and association and club documents in the western communities. The community guides cover those one community at a time.

History
A Short History of Lake Worth Beach
Lake Worth Beach began as a 1911 townsite named Lucerne and grew fast in the 1920s boom. Most of its houses, its casino and its hotel on the lagoon date from those years.
- 750 to 1500
The Jaega people lived along the lagoon; shell mounds from this period have been found in the area.
- c. 1885
Samuel and Fannie James homesteaded on the lagoon shore. Fannie James ran the Jewel post office from 1889 to 1903.
- 1911
The Palm Beach Farms Company platted the Lucerne townsite. The Postal Service turned down the name, since another Lucerne post office existed, and the town took the name of the lagoon.
- June 14, 1913
The Town of Lake Worth was incorporated, with James Love as the first mayor. It reincorporated as a city in 1925.
- 1922
The Lake Worth Casino opened on the beach, after voters approved bonds in 1920.
- 1925
The Gulf Stream Hotel opened on January 25, 1925, overlooking the lagoon. It was listed on the National Register in 1983.
- 1926
The city’s golf course opened on the lagoon. It still operates as the Lake Worth Beach Golf Club.
- 1928
The Okeechobee hurricane destroyed about 600 homes in the city and damaged about 1,500 more.
- 1954
The municipal pier was built. It was later named for William O. Lockhart and repaired after Hurricanes Frances and Jeanne in 2004.
- March 12, 2019
Voters renamed the city Lake Worth Beach.

Your Next Chapter Starts With a Conversation
Every move starts a new chapter: a first home, more room, a place on the water, a winter home that becomes year-round. That deserves more than a search bar.
So we start with a conversation. What should the next few years look like? What can you not give up? I listen, then shape the search around your answers, so you only see places that fit and know what each one costs to own.
From there, my team and I handle the details: visits around your schedule, documents read before you ask, questions answered the same day.
“From start to finish, Monika was on top of every detail… I would use Monika again in a heartbeat!”
“Monika made the process not only easy for us, but enjoyable and stress free.”
“Monika sold the house in 1 day! What else can you ask for! Premium service in every way.”
“We were from out of state and only had 2 days to look at homes. Monika was able to orient us to the area very quickly.”
“She was excellent with follow through and proved to be absolutely knowledgeable and efficient.”
“It’s a pleasure to work with her and I know I can count on her to answer all my questions and concerns.”
Questions
Questions Buyers Ask About Lake Worth Beach
What does a home in Lake Worth Beach cost?
In the 12 months through {THROUGH}, the median Lake Worth home sold for {MEDIAN}, about {PPSF} per square foot, across {SALES} sales. The middle 80% sold between {P10} and {P90}: condominiums and villas at the entry point, city cottages and western single-family homes in the middle, and lagoon-front and larger gated homes at the top. The live listings on this page show current asking prices.
Is a Lake Worth address in the City of Lake Worth Beach?
Not always. The city covers 33460 and the eastern edge of 33461. Most Lake Worth addresses west of I-95, including the golf and gated communities on this page, are in unincorporated Palm Beach County, and Atlantis is its own city. The jurisdiction sets the taxes, the utilities, the permits and the schools, so we confirm it from the county property record for every address.
Why did Lake Worth become Lake Worth Beach?
Voters approved the new name on March 12, 2019, to set the city apart from the wider Lake Worth mailing area and to point to its beach. The town was incorporated as Lake Worth in 1913 and took its name from the Lake Worth Lagoon.
What should I know about buying in a historic district?
College Park, Old Lucerne, South Palm Park and other districts are designated, so exterior changes such as windows, roofs and additions go through the city’s historic preservation review. We check the designation and the permit history for the address.
How far is Lake Worth Beach from the airport?
President Donald J. Trump International Airport (formerly Palm Beach International) is about 15 minutes north on I-95. Fort Lauderdale is about 50 minutes south. The Lake Worth Beach Tri-Rail station connects to West Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade.
Can I rent out a home in Lake Worth Beach?
In the city, we check the City of Lake Worth Beach’s rental registration and licensing requirements for the address. In the western communities, each association’s documents set the minimum lease, how many leases a year and whether the association approves tenants. We check both before you count on rental income.
What should I know about the older houses near downtown?
Many date from the 1920s and 1930s. We look at the roof age, wiring, plumbing and windows, which drive the insurance quote, and the permit history on past work, so the carrying cost is known before you close.
What should I know about flood insurance here?
Flood zones change from street to street, especially near the lagoon. We get the flood zone and an elevation certificate for the address and request wind and flood quotes during the inspection period.
